When it comes to choosing a diamond, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Between technical terms, grading reports, and endless options, the process can quickly become confusing. At Blair & Sheridan, we believe it shouldn’t be that way. Buying or designing a diamond piece should feel exciting, personal, and clear from start to finish.
Here’s a straightforward guide to help you understand diamonds — without the jargon.
You may have heard of the “4 Cs”: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat. These are the four key factors that determine a diamond’s quality and appearance.
While the 4 Cs are useful, they don’t tell the whole story. Two diamonds with the same grading can look completely different in real life. That’s why seeing and comparing stones — and having someone guide you through them — makes such a difference. At Blair & Sheridan, we carefully select diamonds for their overall beauty, not just their paperwork. We look for stones that have life, character, and presence.
Despite having been around since the 1950s, Lab Grown diamonds have been much more prevalent in jewellery design in recent years. You may have heard of them and know a little about what they are and how they formed – at Blair and Sheridan we offer both natural and Lab Grown diamonds and help you come to an informed decision about which type of stone is right for you.
Put simply, Lab Grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds, and they’re graded and certified in exactly the same way. Even trained professionals cannot tell the difference without specialist equipment.
The only difference is how the diamond is formed. Natural diamonds develop deep within the earth over billions of years, whereas Lab Grown diamonds are created in controlled environments using advanced technology that replicates this process but in a much shorter time frame.
Where Lab Grown diamonds really stand out is value. At the moment, they are significantly more affordable than their natural counterparts — often 40–60% less for a comparable stone. This means you can prioritise size or quality within a given budget, without compromising on appearance or durability.
For many clients, this opens up exciting possibilities — whether that’s choosing a larger centre stone, a higher specification, or allocating more of the budget to the overall design. The choice is entirely yours and down to personal preference.
Natural and Lab Grown diamonds both have their place in the fine jewellery industry. It simply comes down to what matters most to you — and that’s where thoughtful guidance makes all the difference.
One of the most rewarding parts of choosing a diamond is creating something that’s entirely unique to you. Whether it’s an engagement ring, a special gift, or a piece to mark a milestone, bespoke design allows you to shape every detail.
Our process is simple and collaborative. We start with a conversation — understanding your style, ideas, and budget. From there, we guide you through diamond options, sketches, and design choices, making sure you feel confident and well-informed at every step.
There’s no pressure, no rush — just thoughtful guidance and expert craftsmanship.
A diamond is more than a simple purchase. It often represents a moment, a promise, or a memory. That’s why choosing the right one — and the right people to help you — matters.
